With 20+ years of professional experience in graphic and web design, marketing, and writing, I can get the job done.
During my career, I have managed websites of over 6,000 pages and social media accounts from hundreds to nearly a million followers.
I am a talented graphic designer (I’ve been using Photoshop since version 7 was released in 2002), and I have significant experience with the rest of the Adobe Creative Suite as well.
With a degree in Technical Writing and Communications, I am a skilled and patient tech trainer and have taught individuals in hundreds of 1:1 appointments. Additionally, I’ve led workshops (in person and online) of up to 200 people on topics such as Online Presence, Photoshop, LinkedIn, Blogging, Graphic Design, and more.
In third grade, I had an assignment to make up a story about how the elementary school got its name. I picked up my #2 pencil and started writing. I couldn’t stop; I turned in a 33-page story and got an A++++ on the assignment!
Fast-forward to today. I’ve written 9 novels through “National Novel Writing Month” (NaNoWriMo), participated in a professional writing group, am currently editing my science fiction novel, and I continue to attend conferences and workshops to hone my writing skills.
In the early 2000’s, my college professor was adamant that we start with the basics, so my first website was completely hand-coded from scratch with HTML, without the help of code editing software. It was something to behold, with a picture of me and a few paragraphs of enlightening content welcoming people to my first website.
Since then, I’ve created and/or managed a ridiculous number of websites, on all the platforms—Blogspot, Wordpress, Wix, Weebly, Squarespace, Drupal, and more. As website technology changes on the daily, I am comfortable figuring out what I don’t know in order to do what needs to be done.
In 2007, I had to quickly learn how to use a wood burning pen when my partner asked me to wood burn a name on a cutting board.
A few weeks later, he made a cutting board for a celebrity in the hip-hop industry and asked me to wood burn her name on it. She loved it, posted about us on Instagram, and our new woodworking business, Tazboards, took off!
Now we make cutting boards, wooden spoons, plaques, and other wooden keepsakes and kitchen items, which I personalize with laser engraving, CNC carving, and hand-drawn pyrography. I also teach online and in-person pyrography (wood burning) classes.
Four things that have influenced my life the most are:
Ten brothers, four sisters, and a multiplying number of nieces and nephews. It’s been a rough-and-tumble, rowdy ride. I’m the third oldest, which has made me a very responsible, independent person.
From 2011-2013, I taught computer classes to college kids and their computer teachers, in Armenian, on Russian operating systems. That taught me resilience and adaptability.
All of my great-grandparents immigrated from Finland in the early 1900s. While I don’t speak Finnish, the culture was woven into my upbringing, with “sisu,” or fortitude, being ingrained into our core.
I wrote a full novel in the month of November for 9 consecutive years, I painted 30 paintings in 30 days, I did 100 squats a day for 30 days, and more, because I believe in pushing myself to achieve.
I grew up in Michigan, but not anywhere in the “mitten.” Did you know there’s another whole part of Michigan? It’s called the Upper Peninsula. It is surrounded by trees and wildlife, and left off of many maps, or treated as part of Wisconsin. It takes hours to get anywhere, and the nearest Starbucks is nearly 3 hours away. It is a magical place to grow up.
I remember my dad walking around the house with his eyes closed and a book on his head because he read that it increased cognitive ability. He would wake us up in the morning by calling out, “Get up and seize the day!” in hopes of influencing our positive mental attitude.
My mom also wanted us to be upbeat and would teach by example. To this day, when someone asks her, “How are you?” she exclaims, “Terrific!”
They were great influences on my interest in professional and personal development. I read a ton of books from their bookshelf, and joined several different professional development classes they recommended, such as Dale Carnegie, Toastmasters, and an Edward Jones financial planning class, usually as the youngest person in the room.
I became a dog mom when I met my husband. Several years later, I had a baby. Now I balance work with raising a toddler. (I say “balance,” but anyone with a kid knows there is no such thing.)
Our little family, dogs included, moved to Connecticut in 2024 and that brings us to the present.
Please get in touch if something I said here strikes you, or if you’d like to work together.
Curious about what I have going on? It will all be in the blog soon!
